China's Trailer & Flatbed Exports To Southeast Asia Surge, Up Over 30% YoY in 2024

I. Impressive Export Data, Strong Market Demand

According to the latest statistics from the General Administration of Customs, from January to June 2024, China's exports of trailers and flatbeds to Southeast Asia reached 42,000 units, with an export value of 830 million US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 28.7% and 32.5% respectively, and the growth rate increased by 10.2 percentage points compared with the same period last year. Among them, flatbed trailers, as the main export models, accounted for 45% of the total export volume, mainly used for the transportation of raw materials in Southeast Asia's manufacturing industry and the transfer of materials for infrastructure projects; the export of special-purpose trailers grew the fastest, with a year-on-year increase of 56.3%, and products such as LPG transport semi-trailers and engineering dump trailers are deeply favored by the local market.

II. Concentrated Core Markets, Differentiated Regional Demand

The three major markets of Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia contributed more than 60% of the export share. With its rapidly developing manufacturing industry, Vietnam has become the largest export destination for China's trailers and flatbeds. In the first half of 2024, the export value reached 290 million US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 38.2%, with particularly strong demand for container chassis trailers and light flatbed trucks; the Thai market focuses on high-end products, with high recognition for trailers equipped with intelligent monitoring systems and efficient braking systems; relying on large-scale infrastructure projects, Indonesia's exports of engineering flatbed trucks and heavy dump trailers increased by 42.1% and 39.5% year-on-year respectively.

III. Product Upgrading and Iteration, Continuous Enhancement of Competitiveness

To meet the needs of the Southeast Asian market, Chinese enterprises are accelerating product upgrading and transformation. In terms of lightweight design, the adoption of new materials such as high-strength steel and aluminum alloy has reduced the weight of trailers by 10%-15%, effectively improving transportation efficiency and reducing fuel consumption; in terms of customization, the heat dissipation system has been optimized for the local tropical climate, and the wheelbase and suspension design have been adjusted for complex road conditions to meet the needs of different transportation scenarios; in terms of intelligence, some enterprises have launched intelligent trailers equipped with GPS positioning, real-time cargo monitoring, tire pressure monitoring and other functions, and their market share is gradually increasing.

IV. Supported by Policy Dividends, Promising Market Potential

Since the implementation of the RCEP agreement, the tariff reduction and exemption policies between China and Southeast Asian countries have been gradually implemented. The average tariff reduction for trailer and flatbed exports has reached 15%-20%, which has significantly improved the price competitiveness of products. At the same time, under the Belt and Road Initiative, cross-border transportation infrastructure such as the China-Laos Railway and the China-Thailand Railway has been continuously improved, further smoothing the export channels of China's trailers and flatbeds. Industry insiders predict that with the continuous increase in infrastructure investment and the expansion of cross-border trade in Southeast Asia, China's annual exports of trailers and flatbeds to Southeast Asia are expected to exceed 1.8 billion US dollars in 2024, and the market size will maintain an average annual growth rate of more than 25% in the next three years.
