A barn semi-trailer is a semi-trailer with barn doors, which are hinged doors that swing open to maximize the cargo area. Barn doors are also known as container style doors or double-swing doors.
Importance Of Barn Semi-Trailer
The agriculture business uses a wide variety of semi-trailers, from planting to harvest. While less common in our world of shipping, it is important to become familiar with the various types of grain trailers.
Hopper – Hopper semi-trailers (hoppers) are a specialized type of agriculture trailer that is used for hauling grain. These trailers have two hoppers, one at the front and one at the rear, which can open and close to control the unloading of the grain. The operator uses a crank handle to open and close the sliding plates at the base of the hoppers.
Hopper trailers are a convenient way to transport grain from one location to another, and they can service a variety of farming applications.
Hoppers are designed for use with tractors, though they can be pulled by other vehicles with the proper hitch. The hitch used must be able to support the weight of the trailer, as well as the loads being hauled. Hoppers are not recommended for hauling livestock, as the animals can easily escape from the open hoppers.
If you are looking for a trailer to haul grain, a hopper is a good option. These semi-trailers are durable and offer a high payload capacity. With proper care, a hopper trailer will last for many years.
Belt – Belt trailers are a fast and efficient way to unload your product and require minimal labor. Drivers can simply operate the belt from the cab of the trailer and unload an entire haul in just a few minutes.
This makes belt trailers ideal for hauling large loads or products that need to be unloaded quickly. Belt trailers can haul a wide variety of materials, such as grain, seed, gravel, and more.
Belt trailers are safer for both the driver and the product. The hydraulics or electronic belt prevents the load from shifting during transport, helping to avoid serious accidents. The belt also protects the product from being damaged during transport. Belt trailers are more expensive than other types of trailers, but their safety and efficiency make them worth the investment.
Types of Barn Semi-Trailer
Flatbed trailers offer versatility and as a result are some of the most commonly used trailers. The name stems from the fact that flatbed trailers have a flat deck that is open on all sides and does not have a roof or a box to cover the load. This open layout makes it an easy trailer to load and unload but does not protect cargo from the elements of weather and roads. Flatbed trailers are perfect for shipping wide or large items as the load can be lifted from above with a crane or from the side with a forklift.
Step deck trailers, also known as drop deck trailers, are similar to flatbed trailers in that they are an open trailer but do have some differences. While flatbed trailers have only one level, step deck trailers have two deck levels that are known as the upper deck and lower deck.
Lowboy trailers are also known as double drop trailers because they have two drops in deck height that allow for an extremely low deck. The first drop is right after the gooseneck and the second drop is before the wheels. This additional dropdown feature is what makes lowboy trailers ideal for moving taller equipment without needing to obtain height permits.
Reefer trailers, also known as refrigerated trailers, are built with insulation and temperature controls. Typically, these trailers use refrigeration to enable the transport of perishable, chilled or frozen products, but they can also protect temperature-sensitive goods from frigid outside weather.
Dump trailers are a type of hauling trailer that use hydraulics to lift the trailer bed up and tilt it to unload heavy hauls with ease and the help of gravity. Although dump trailers are oftentimes confused with dump trucks, dump trailers allow you to customize the trailer size to correspond to your load. Dump trailers are less expensive than dump trucks but still offer the ability to haul heavy payloads safely and efficiently.
Dry van trailers, also known as enclosed or box trailers, are fully enclosed and are used for shipping non-perishable goods. Although there is no temperature control, the cargo is protected from the elements of weather and roads. Freight is loaded at the rear of the dry van trailer and a loading dock is commonly used. Some dry van trailers also allow freight to be loaded from the side of the trailer or use moving floors.
Tanker trailers are typically used to transport liquid and are manufactured from aluminum or stainless steel. Recognized by their unique shape, tanker trailers are cylindrical, and this is for good reason. Tanker trucks are built with a cylinder shape because this takes pressure off the tank itself, provides a lower center of gravity, prevents a liquid surge, and allows for easier extraction and cleaning.
Tipper trailers do exactly what their name suggests: tip to let gravity empty the load. These trailers use hydraulics to raise and tilt their platform. Perfect for hauling and dumping large debris, tipper trailers work well for bricks, rocks, gravel, and other heavy materials. Available in a wide variety of sizes and capacities, tipper trailers are highly desirable for any garbage removal or construction project.
Maintenance Tips For Heightened Reliability Of Barn Semi-Trailer

Tip 1: Regular Lubrication Of Moving Parts
Semi-trailers consist of numerous moving components that must be regularly lubricated to prevent friction and wear. Key areas include the kingpin, which connects the tractor to the trailer, and the landing gear, which supports the trailer when it is not attached to the tractor. Regular greasing of these parts ensures smooth operation and extends their lifespan.
Tip 2: Keep Electrical Systems In Check
The electrical system, including lights, wiring, and connectors, should be inspected regularly to avoid any downtime due to electrical failures. Ensure all lights are functioning properly to comply with road safety regulations and to maintain visibility during night time operations.
For trailers with additional infrastructure like refrigeration units, Moffet material handlers, and other specialized equipment, electrical system maintenance becomes way more important.
Tip 3: Monitor Suspension Components
A semi-trailer’s suspension system bears the brunt of the load, and regular checks are necessary to ensure it remains in optimal condition. Look for signs of wear or damage in the airbags and shock absorbers, and check that all bolts and bushings are tight and not worn out. Also, when getting an alignment for your truck, be sure to get your trailer aligned as well. Proper suspension not only protects the structure of your trailer but also ensures a smooth ride for the goods you’re hauling.
Tip 4: Inspect The Flooring
Check the trailer’s flooring regularly, especially if you transport heavy goods. Look for signs of wear, moisture damage, or corrosion. Wooden floors should be checked for rot or warping, which can compromise the safety of your cargo.
Tip 5: Test Air And Electrical Lines For Abrasion
Air lines and electrical cords, which connect the trailer to the tractor, should be inspected for any signs of wear or abrasion. Ensure that these lines are securely mounted and free of damage to maintain control over brakes and lighting systems.
Tip 6: Ensure Proper Wheel Alignment
Misaligned wheels can cause uneven tire wear and reduce fuel efficiency. Have your semi-trailer’s wheel alignment checked periodically, especially if you notice uneven tire wear or your trailer pulls to one side.
Tip 7: Perform Regular Cleaning
Lastly, a clean trailer is not just about aesthetics—it can also prevent issues like rust and corrosion. Regular washing helps to remove corrosive substances like road salt, which can damage metal components over time. Ensure the undercarriage and wheels are thoroughly cleaned to remove any build-up that could lead to long-term damage.
Perform periodic tire pressure checks and ensure proper Tire inflation in your vehicle. Tires running on under inflation conditions are prone to structural failures, like blowouts and Tread separation. This happens mainly because the continuous running of tires in under inflation conditions generates excessive heat uneven tire wear and substantially decreases the braking and handling capabilities of the vehicle.
Maintaining proper inflation pressure will help in maximizing tire life, improve vehicle handling, increase fuel efficiency, and overall driver & vehicle safety.
Maintaining a proper tire rotation schedule is also very important. Recommended tire rotation patterns is readily available in the owner’s manual of the vehicle. Even and smooth tire wear from front-to-rear and from side-to-side can easily be achieved by routine tire rotation. Please note that the periodic tire rotation will not prevent or circumvent wear issues caused by the worn mechanical components.
Tire balancing is crucial for smooth drive and steering control. Out-of-balance tires may produce bumps which may become more noticeable at higher speeds. It is highly recommended to get the tires balanced during the initial installation of new tires and then during every remounting.
Avoid replacing a single tire in your semi-trailer truck. Tire replacement should be performed in sets or pairs. Replacing a single tire in your vehicle can cause vehicle instability and create vehicle handling issues.
A low humid dark place away from the direct sunlight is best suited to store the safety tire stocks for your semi-truck trailer.Tire storing space should be away from solvents, grease, oil, or any ozone-producing electrical equipment, which have deteriorating effects on tires.
Perform periodic Tire inspection and watch out for abnormal tire wear, signs of punctures, embedded objects, cracks, bulges, and sidewall injuries
The spare tire for your Semi-trailer- truck should always be kept in proper inflated and ready for use condition. As we never know when you’re going to need it.
Considerations When Buying a Barn Semi-Trailer
Compatibility: Always double-check that the used trailer you’re interested in is compatible with your Barn Semi-Trailer and the cargo you plan to haul.
Maintenance/Inspection: Ask the seller why they’re getting rid of the trailer and, if possible, for its maintenance history. You’ll also need to check that the trailer has a current Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) inspection.
Tires/Brakes: Tires are a great indicator of the overall quality of the trailer, as well as how well it’s been maintained. Check for uneven tread, embedded objects, or bulges on the sidewalls, as they may all be indicative of larger issues with the body and chassis. Also, check the brakes for fraying wires or unusual wear and tear.
Lights/Electrical: Test all the lights on the trailer, checking for dead spots or burnt bulbs. As you do, inspect all the electric wiring for any cuts, fraying, or extreme wear.
Structural Components: Using the help of a friend and a flashlight, do a thorough inspection of the structural body of the trailer. Is the undercarriage covered in rust? Are there any cracks where the slider rails are welded to the cross members? Climb inside the trailer and have a friend seal the door to check for any holes in the body. If purchasing a refrigerated trailer, test its functionality and look for additional wear.
